Washington DC – “A Different Story Out of Haiti”

The University of Miami School of Communication’s Knight Center for International Media and The Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) launched today Our Global Challenges: A Series of Dialogues on the Most Pressing Global Issues of our Time. The first dialogue focused on Meeting the Challenge of the Millennium Development Goals in Haiti: A Progress Report from the Poorest Country in the Americas.
Pressing global issues to be tackled by leading experts

Knight Center’s second international multimedia workshop was a success
Under the direction of the Knight Chair in Visual Journalism, University of Miami School of Communication professor Rich Beckman, 18 journalists and journalism educators from across Africa converged on Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, in September to learn cutting edge multimedia journalism skills and strategies during a five-day workshop.
1H2O screenings reach thousands of children in India
In celebration of World World Water Day 2009, more than 20,000 children in 19 states in 150 locations in India viewed the documentary 1H2O, a film that explores the ever-changing relationship between human beings and water as we face a world water crisis of proportions we have never before seen.
The effort was a partnership between the Knight Center for International Media at the School of Communication, University of Miami, and Pratham and ASER Centre in India, in collaboration with ITVS International.
Knight Center extends reach of World Press Photo
A team of visual journalists at the University of Miami School of Communication has successfully launched, for the third consecutive year, a multimedia presentation of the stories behind the photographs that won the World Press Photo awards, the world’s largest and most prestigious annual contest for photojournalists.
Knight Center for International Media announces new Resident Professional
Photographer and documentary filmmaker Irene Carolina Herrera has been selected to become the fourth Knight Resident Professional. Herrera, 32, was born in Venezuela, raised in Miami, and now lives in Tokyo, Japan, where she is an assistant professor in film and media arts at Temple University, Japan Campus.
1H2O.org extended video contest through Aug. 15
The Knight Center for International Media and ITVS International have extended the deadline for the first in a series of video contests as part of the 1H2O-Campaign 2009, launched on World Water Day to encourage discussion and awareness of water issues around the world.
The first contest, One Take, is a video monologue, recorded in any language.
Thousands of children in India watched “1H2O” in celebration of World Water Day

We work with children all over India, so when we received a package with a DVD copy of “1H2O” from Miami, we wondered how we could show these kids the documentary and use the screening as an opportunity to find out what they thought about water issues.

Multimedia journalism workshops focus on telling the world’s most underreported stories
An international multimedia workshop sponsored by the Knight Center for International Media was held at Hong Kong Baptist University from April 13-17, 2009. The International Multimedia Workshops for Ethical Reporting on the World’s Most Underreported Issues attracted journalism professors from all over the Asia, including China, Singapore, India, the Philippines, Thailand, Mongolia and Taiwan.
New partnership brings judging of major online journalism awards to UM
The Online News Association, the world’s largest association of online journalists, has announced a partnership with the School of Communication at the University of Miami to host the Online Journalism Awards (OJA), one of the most respected international online media competitions, now in its 10th year.

The movie is a movement - UM launches campaign for World Water Day

Media literacy social network - ‘Milieu’ - is launched

The Knight Center for International Media has launched a media literacy global discussion forum, in collaboration with the International Center for Media and the Public Agenda at the University of Maryland and the Salzburg Global Seminar. The Milieu’s initiative came from members of the 2008 Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change.
Knight Center-affiliate projects win Broadcast Education Association awards
Two University of Miami School of Communication student multimedia projects placed in the top three of the 2009 Broadcast Education Association’s Student Competitions. The BEA Festival and Competitions provide a national refereed exhibition of faculty and student creative activities and is a national showcase for their work.

School of Communication students create media packages for Special Olympics Athletes

Four video teams from the UM School of Communication captured the U.S. arrival of the Special Olympics torch, the Flame of Hope, on Jan. 13. The torch arrived in Miami via Jet Ski near Ocean Drive and 10th Avenue in South Beach, where Special Olympic Athletes welcomed the flame and carried it across the Mac Arthur Causeway to downtown Miami’s Bayfront Park for a ceremony.

Gali Tibbon has become a fixture at the Jordan River, where she currently spends her personal time documenting the rituals and activities of the people who come from all over the world to be baptized and visit the historic site.
Gaby Bruna: A Success Story
Gaby Bruna was studying sociology at the Universidad de Costa Rica and journalism at the Universidad Latina in Costa Rica before transferring to the University of Miami School of Communication in 2005. Three years later, she graduated top of her class and was named the best student in visual journalism. Soon after her May graduation, she left for an internship at the Washington Post and was later hired as a video journalist and multimedia producer.

Knight Center launches World Cities Anchor Project

Water is part of young students’ curriculum in Miami
Young students from Gulliver South Miami campus visited the University of Miami yesterday to learn how water - and the lack of it - could impact their lives and the world.
Four classes, from first to fourth grades, of about 70 children filled five rows of the Cosford Cinema to watch and discuss scenes from “One Water,” a documentary filmed in 15 countries about ways people use and misuse water around the globe.
School of Communication of Universidad de los Andes in Chile visits UM
Dean of the School of Communication of Universidad de los Andes, Santiago, Chile, María Ignacia Errázuriz, visited the University of Miami School of Communication and the Knight Center for International Media to meet with different professors and discuss partnership agreements.
This visit is part of her Eisenhower Fellowship, which awarded this year 19 fellows from Latin America to prepare future leaders, who would then be able to produce changes in their different fields.

On Oct. 9, Grogg and Chatterjee presented a multi-media lecture and discussion on “Communication in the Connected World” to an audience of advanced graduate students and faculty of Tsinghua University’s School of Communication.

Janbek represented the Salzburg Academy in Austria this summer at the Salzburg Trilogue, an annual forum organized by the Bertelsmann Stiftung Executive Board and the Austrian Ministry of European and International Affairs, held concurrently with the Salzburg Festival. The “Trilogue” goes one step further than a “dialogue,” as it represents high level members from three areas: business, politics and the arts.
Knight Center launches workshop series

The Knight Center for International Media’s series of technology and new media workshops launched successfully with a video shooting training, led by Chuck Fadely, a visual journalist pioneer at The Miami Herald.
Fadely discussed how visual elements complement a reporter’s story online and taught students to shoot video for web news using a mini-DV camera, Canon HV-20. He also explored basic techniques about lighting and framing.

“One Water” movie wraps up in Guatemala

We picked up our bags one last time to finish shooting for One Water. On Aug. 30, 2008, Ali Habashi, Ed Talavera and I boarded a flight to Guatemala City, where we met up with Melissa Rosato from FogQuest, a Canadian non-profit that has been helping communities around the world set up fog collectors that provide a source of clean sustainable water to communities in need.
Upon arrival we drove northwest (not northeast) for seven hours to arrive in Huehuetenango at the foot of Cuchumatanes – the highest mountain range in Guatemala. After spending the night in “Huehue” we set of for the Village of Tojquia within the municipality of San Juan Ixcoy.
Living with Malaria

Sheilah (pronounced Shay-lee) is a Class 8 student at Iguhu Primary School in Kakamega, Kenya. Like many children, she has great ambition and dreams of one day being a doctor. Also like many other African children, she has malaria.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, malaria is responsible for as many as 500 million infections and one million deaths worldwide, many of them young children.

Knight Center meets with international broadcasters at conference in South Africa

Broadcasters from various countries agreed at the International Broadcasters Leadership Summit to raise the public’s consciousness about water by collaborating with the 1H20 campaign, a new global movement.
The Independent Television Service (ITVS), a U.S. based organization that supports independent producers, and the University of Miami’s Knight Center for International Media hosted the summit, which took place on May 9 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Knight Chairs travel to capital and New York City
School of Communication Knight Chairs in Journalism, Joe Treaster and Rich Beckman, visited New York City and the Nation’s Capital to meet School of Communication alumni and other notable guests the week of May 12-16. The New York City and Washington, D.C. introductions of the Knight Chairs were led by Dean Sam Grogg who also moderated a brief discussion on the convergence of global media with the Chairs.
Belgrade: The tap water seems fine, but there’s more to the story

BELGRADE, Serbia – This is a place where tourists are told it is safe to drink water from the tap. And that seems to be true.
I’ve just spent nearly a week in Belgrade in June with several hundred editors and publishers from around the world, members of the influential International Press Institute. Many of them were drinking the tap water and there was no run on medical facilities, as far as I could tell.

Partnership brings together public broadcasters to promote awareness on the global water crisis
The Knight Center for International Media at the University of Miami School of Communication and Independent Television Service International (ITVS) announced their partnership on Friday, May 9, to engage public broadcasters from Bahrain, Colombia, India, and South Africa to create television programs addressing the global potable water crisis. The partners launched the venture at the International Public Television (INPUT) Conference in Johannesburg where the partners participated with the globe’s broadcasters and filmmakers at a Leadership Summit to coordinate and plan the next steps for this collaboration.

Kent State University Stark Campus, led by Dean Betsy V. Boze, will celebrate Earth Day 2008 by sponsoring the United States Premiere of “One Water,” a film that celebrates the planet’s relationship to water, at 7:30 p.m. April 22 at the Palace Theatre in downtown Canton.
Advisory board member speaks on Cuban-Jewish communities
Coral Gables, FL (March 26, 2008) - Ruth Behar a member of the University of Miami School of Communication’s Knight Center for International Media Advisory Board and professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan, lectured on Tuesday, March 25, at the College of Arts and Sciences Gallery about the small community of Cuban Jews living on the island. Behar, with her family, fled Cuba at four years old after Fidel Castro took power in 1959. In her latest book titled: An Island Called Home: Returning to Jewish Cuba (Rutgers Univ. Press, 2007), Behar recounts her journey back to Cuba and the Jewish communities she discovers there.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (March 24, 2008) - The 2007 World Press Photo exhibit opened in the Dominican Republic on March 17 at the Museo de las Casas Reales in the Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo. More than 100 invited guests attended the opening reception sponsored by the Dominican newspaper Hoy. The World Press Photo exhibit contains the winning images from the 2007 annual photojournalism contest held in Amsterdam. The exhibit’s visit to Santo Domingo was sponsored by the Knight Center for International Media at the University of Miami School of Communication.

World Press Photo Exhibit made lasting impressions

The World Press Photo Exhibit made a stop in the School of Communication’s Common Ground Courtyard from February 26-March 5. The exhibit, which came to the SoC for the second year, is a collection of the organization’s 2007 award-winning photographs. The winning photographs of the traveling photo exhibit were selected from 4,460 professional photographers from 124 countries.

Ecuadorian photojournalist Pablo Corral Vega joins Knight Center as Resident Professional for spring
Ecuadorian photojournalist Pablo Corral Vega will serve as a Resident Professional at the Knight Center for International Media during the Spring semester of 2008. During his residency, Mr. Vega will print a 60 image version of his larger exhibit entitled 25 and consisting of as many years of photojournalism across the world. He will work with students and faculty at the School of Communication on printing the exhibit and organizing international visual journalism panels that will discuss the potential of photojournalism to have cross-border impact.
University of Miami School of Communication announces Knight Chair appointments
Coral Gables, FL (Jan. 16, 2008) - The School of Communication of the University of Miami announced today the appointment of two internationally renowned journalists to prestigious Knight Chairs in Journalism endowed by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. With the appointments, the University of Miami becomes the 21st institution in the nation to have Knight Chairs.

UM Knight Center for International Media designs America’s newspaper of the future
Coral Gables, FL (Nov. 20, 2007) The Knight Center for International Media held a public symposium titled “The New American Newspaper” on Thursday, Nov. 15 in the School of Communication’s Shojaee Hall. The symposium consisted of a wide-ranging conversation with industry professionals about the state of American newspapers and websites and how a more visual approach to information delivery might extend the reach of newspapers in our society.
One Water wins AMAP Prize of €2000 at EcoVision 2007 in Palermo, Italy
The feature version of One Water directed by Sanjeev Chatterjee and Ali Habashi was awarded the AMAP PRIZE FOR THE BEST DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE WATER RESOURCES of € 2.000.
