Dr. Anilla Cherian

Dr. Anilla Cherian is an independent environmental advisor who has worked with a variety of institutions including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat, Global Environmental Facility (GEF), Rockefeller Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, and the University of West Indies’ Centre for Environment and Development. She has worked on, and written about a range of sustainable development issues, including climate change, energy, water, environmental financing and biodiversity. She is currently working as independent expert consultant for UNDP’s Bureau for Development Policy/Energy and Environment Group on a series of climate change initiatives. She has also recently published articles on climate change and environmental financing in peer-reviewed global journals.

She has a dual undergraduate degree from Cornell University, and has a PhD from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her doctoral thesis was entitled “Energy Policies, Liberalization and the Framing of Climate Change Policies in India”. She has received grant funding from the MacArthur Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Institute for the Study of World Politics. She has also worked as a post-Doctoral Fellow at the Rockefeller Foundation.
